June 28th, 2010 - 11:07 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJune 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Martin D. Ginsburg, a 78 year old Georgetown Law Professor lost his battle with cancer in Sunday, as announced by the Supreme Court. He is survived by his wife, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Known to their friends as “Marty and Ruth” Ginsburg, the couple were married for 56 years and made the term “opposites attract” seem even more true. Their friends describe their union as a successful marriage of two very different individuals.
Martin loved cooking, and entertaining and would often tell jokes when they had guests at their Watergate Apartment. Ruth, however, was shy, quiet and soft spoken. The two met while on a blind date at Cornell in 1951. Ruth was 18 years old at the time. They dates for three years and were wed.
Ruth stated that he had been her “best friend and biggest booster,” since they were teenagers. She added “He was the only young man I dated who cared that I had a brain.” Before his death, Martin summarized their relationship to the ‘New York Times in 1997, “As a general rule, my wife does not give me any advice about cooking, and I do not give her any advice about the law. This seems to work quite well on both sides.”
The couple have two children, a daughter, Jane C Ginsburg who is a law professor at Columbia University, and a son, James C Ginsberg who is the founder and president of the Chicago Classical Recording Foundation. Martin is also survived by four grandchildren. His burial service will be a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
