LAS VEGAS (BNO NEWS) – A Las Vegas, Nevada convicted felon last Friday, who held two employees at gunpoint in his attempt to rob a furniture store, was sentenced to just over 14 years in federal prison, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Curtis Caraway, 42, was sentenced to 172 months in prison and five years of supervised release. Caraway was convicted by a jury in September 2009 of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Attempted Interference with Commerce by robbery, and using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence.

In February 2009, Caraway entered Fine Furniture Liquidators and approached a 69-year-old salesman who was sitting at his desk. Caraway pointed a hand gun at the salesman’s head and asked the salesman where the money was. The salesman replied that the money was in the safe in the back, but that he could not open it. Caraway then directed the salesman and another male employee to take him to the safe.

When Caraway was again told that neither of the employees could open the safe, he became very angry and said he would start shooting people if they did not open the safe. Caraway then made the men lie down on the ground and remove everything from their pockets. Caraway threw one of the victims’ wallets on the floor when he found nothing in it, and then left the store with the other victim’s wallet and cell phone.

On the way out of the store, Caraway put his gun in the face of two women who were holding infant children. Shortly thereafter, Caraway was observed walking on Martin Luther King Boulevard. As officers approached Caraway, he ran from them and pointed a hand gun at a patrol car.

Caraway continued to run until he fell down and dropped the gun, which was later picked up by law enforcement and found to be loaded.

Caraway was convicted in Clark County, Nevada, in 1986 of felony battery after he was observed masturbating outside an apartment window and then forced his way into the apartment and tried to rape the female resident.

The case was investigated by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and ATF.
