There were reports that vendors were intimidating tourists and troubling them too. So plainclothes police officers were investigating the whole issue.
Another police officer who was present on the scene of crime, said that the vendors being investigated would approach tourists, ask for their names, write the names on a counterfeit CD, and then demand payment for the CD.
The police officer approached the vendor who was also the primary suspect in this racket and then the suspect got frightened and he ran away towards a parking place, and then started firing at the officer from there. The officer had no option but to fire back and in this process, he was shot and subsequently killed.
The shooting happened at the corner of 46th Street and Broadway, in the morning around 11:15 a.m.
The vendor was taken to the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and was listed in serious condition and was ultimately declared dead.
