Man gets death for raping, strangling Tiffany Marie SouersApril 24th, 2009 - 12:36 am ICT by GD
A man from Tennessee who raped and strangled South Carolina college girl Tiffany Marie Souers with her own bikini top was sentenced to death after he asked for a death penalty from the judge.
Jerry Buck Inman, 38, was calm when the judge read his death sentence and then apologized to the family of Tiffany Marie Souers even though no family member had come to the courtroom. He said, “There is no excuse for any of the things I’ve done. There’s nothing I can say that will ease any of the pain I’ve caused them. I’m just sorry for taking their daughter and their sister away from them.”
Inman is said to be very guilty about his crime and had earlier told the judge, “I’ve shown by my actions both in and out of prison that I cannot be rehabilitated. I don’t say any of this to be disrespectful, but your honor, in all reality, there’s really only one sentence appropriate for someone like me, and I ask you to impose that sentence.” In South Carolina, the standard form of carrying out a sentenced execution is through lethal injection or the electric chair.
Tiffany, 20, an engineering student at the Clemson University was found strangled with her striped bikini top still wound around her neck in her apartment on campus. Solicitor Bob Ariail told Judge Edward Miller, “There are mean and evil people in this world who do not deserve to continue to live with the rest of us, regardless of how confined they may be. Jerry Buck Inman and this murder and his prior behavior makes this one of those cases where the death penalty should be applied. … He’s been in prison virtually all of his adult life, and he’s exhibited no change.” Inman is a registered sex offender and had written a confession note admitting the rape and murder.
