Major Earthquake Punches South Pacific

May 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Seismologists have declared that a shallow 7.2 earthquake has pummeled off the picturesque Vanuatu. This had generated a warning by America of the arrival of a tsunami for several zones of the South Pacific counting the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia, all of them being extremely scenic locations.

The considerable tremors (at 1714 GMT Thursday) walloped at a depth of 36 kilometers, 2,070 kilometers northeast of the Australian city of Brisbane. This data has been circulated by the American Geological Survey.

The significance of the emission of such tsunami warnings is that the shorelines in close proximity to the epicenter can undergo destructive tidal waves within minutes. However, the warning of a tsunami was later quashed.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has now asserted that the sea level readings do not demonstrate any sign of a calamitous tsunami. The Centre has proclaimed that the tsunami warning for all the zones covered by this centre is invalidated.

The Centre had earlier urged the regional authorities to adopt defensive steps as a major earthquake of this extent can cause catastrophic damage via the production of a devastating tsunami that will victimize the coastlines.
