NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA (BNO NEWS) – A Louisiana woman pleaded guilty to defrauding the American Red Cross, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Shanda Moore, age 26, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana repeatedly applied for and received disaster assistance funds from the American Red Cross on roughly eight occasions during the fall of 2005, each time indicating that she had not yet received any money.

The Red Cross made disaster assistance money of up to $1565 offered to those affected by the hurricanes of 2005 on a one-time only basis, but with Moore’s scheme, she deceptively received approximately $8,490.

Moore is facing a maximum term of imprisonment of twenty years, a $250,0000 fine, restitution to the American Red Cross, and three years of supervised release for one count of mail fraud. Her sentencing is scheduled for June 23.
