Mar 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The winner of the HGTV Dream Home 2010 was finally announced on Monday night and the lucky winner turned out to be Louisiana resident Myra Lewis. The win must have indeed been extremely special for Myra Lewis as she was one of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which completely destroyed her New Orleans home, when it struck in 2005.
All the viewers were glued to the television screens on Monday night when HGTV was scheduled to air its ‘Dream Home Giveaway 2010′ special. Even Myra Lewis was among the millions of viewers who were eagerly waiting to known the results and was watching TV with her son Chris, when HGTV’s Jamie Durie landed at her door steps to give her the good news that she had just won herself a lavish Pueblo-style home situated in New Mexico. All the viewers were able to witness her emotional outbreak as it was aired during the show on Monday night. While reacting to her win, Myra Lewis exclaimed that she was totally blown away by the pleasant surprise and acknowledged that it was indeed hard for her to believe that she was now the proud owner of a luxurious home.
Myra Lewis, who is the assistant director of Dillard University’s Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, supposedly entered the Dream Home Sweepstakes for multiple years. It has been revealed that this time Myra Lewis and her sister entered the giveaway every single day while repeatedly reminding each other to do so. Their dedication surely turned out to be fruitful as apart from the home, the winner would also receive $500,000 in cash and a 2010 GMC Terrain.

What HGTV doesn’t tell you is that every winner of these dream homes has had to sell it, because the taxes on the winning monies, the tax on the appraised value of the house and the property taxes on the house are so exorbitant, no “joe the plumber” can afford it, really.
Only the folks who are making very high incomes could afford something like this, and HGTV should be limiting their entries to these contests to “people who only make very high incomes or are very well off” need only apply.
For sure, this older lady from NOLA is NOT going to be able to pay all the income taxes on this “prize” and she certainly won’t be able to live in the house.
HGTV Dream Home Giveaway is a rip off!
Makes for good tv viewing though

Well, one could say that the cash prize money could go towards the payment of the taxes, but it still isn’t enough!
And how could any normal, middle class American afford the HOA dues that this particular house is located in?
C’mon, read the stories of past winnersd!

Dillard college, where Lewis works, recieves grants from Hilton which is also partnered with HGTV food network. Dillard is a “sister” college to Scripps College in CA. Scripps is the sponsor for the contest. They should have just handed Lewis the prize. Why did they even bother with a drawing? 11 out of 13 past winners have all come from states where Scripps is headquartered. All but one winner was a homeowner. Sponsor “reserves the right” to screen and chose the best winner and man do they ever! This is a contest to boost ratings, period.

This whole contest is a sham, and I also posted that this makes for great tv!
Oh sure, Ms. Lewis is on all the talk shows, she’s so excited, but is she telling everyone she can’t afford the house?
Finding info on the net from past winners of these HGTV dream homes, I found out the winner is not even allowed to spend time in the house! And they’re only allowed to take one small item out of it as a token prize, because none of the winners were able to keep the house!
I’m glad I stopped entering this thing and found out the truth about it! Boy, was I shocked!!!
Thanks for more of the truth Keith!

Thanks, i thought HGTV paid the taxes. OMG!
HGTV should pay taxes and the winner should not already own a home. That should be a criteria for entering.
I have a friend who is homeless and he should win the house!
