Lost Shakespeare ‘Double Falsehood’ Play May Be Performed
March 17th, 2010 - 1:02 am ICT by Angela Kaye Mason ( Leave a comment )Mar 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Amid the controversy over whether or not it is an authentic Shakespeare verse, the play known as The Lost Shakespeare or Double Falsehood Play may be performed once again, on a Stratford-upon-Avon stage after 300 years in the shadows.
There is new evidence which suggests that the play written by playwright Lewis Theobald, which was first performed in 1727, was mostly taken from words written by Shakespeare himself, in 1613. At the time Theobald stated that the play was taken from a lost work of Shakespeare, but everyone mostly dismissed it as a hoax.
Now a Nottingham University Professor by the name of Brean Hammond has found new evidence to suggest that Theobald was telling the truth all those years ago. Hammond is quoted as saying, “I don’t think you can ever be absolutely 100 percent but, yes, I am convinced that it is Shakespeare. It’s fair to say it’s been something of an obsession. You need to ask my wife but a fair few of my waking hours have been devoted to this subject.” Many experts admit that the play is very similar to other Shakespeare plays, but even Hammond describes it as “flawed.” His research has been backed by Arden, a Shakespeare publisher, who will release it in print on March 22, and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford may even be the company which performs the play.
