Lost Abbey Ale To Change Label After Being Accused Of Inspiring Violence Against Witches
October 25th, 2010 - 9:03 pm ICT by Pen Men At WorkOctober 25, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A pale ale going by the name of Lost Abbey Witch’s Wit Ale has created quite a sensation of late. Unfortunately, it is not the content but the exterior of the bottle that has caused a controversy leading to a change of the label.
The label on the bottle currently shows a witch burning at stake which has led to a protest by Vicki Noble who is quite well known in the Wiccan and other pagan circles. She was enraged by the label and created a huge hue and cry about it being offensive and politically incorrect. She said that she was looking for good beer when she chanced upon the label.
She then began sending chain mails across the Wiccan community which asked whether they can stop the brewer from their hate imagery. The subject line was entirely in Capitals. She went on to ask her recipients whether they can imagine anybody showing a black man being lynched or a Jew being thrown into a gas chamber. And images of witches burnt are not to be tolerated either.
The brewery faced the worst with e-mails, Facebook comments and faxes galore. All protested their depicting witches in a bad light.
Sage Osterfeld, one of the spokesmen for Port Brewing said that they had been accused of inspiring violence against women in general and pagans in particular. They have also been charged with making the witches responsible for all that was wrong with the world.
The brewery is now trying to make amends and plans to hold a contest for creating a great looking label. However, all this is destined to take place after Halloween.
