Long lost Mummy finally returns Baltimore
November 11th, 2011 - 8:00 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattPort Huron, Mich., Nov 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) University of Maryland has taken possession of a long lost mummy. The mummy was returned to the university’s School of Medicine after officers completed their investigations into the original owner of it.
The mummy was in possession of the police for half a decade. It was taken from a woman who tried to sell it on the Internet on Halloween 2006. University of Maryland contacted the police station and received the package recently.
The mummy is the skeletal remains of a child. The skeleton is estimated to date back to the 19th century. It was brought from Scotland to the United States in 1820 and it was then given to the university.
The university repackaged the skeletal remains and added it to its collections.
The director of the Anatomical Services Division at the University of Maryland said that, “I’m glad to have the little fella back home.”
The mummy was seized from a woman who had no permit to keep a human part. The police however declined to charge her when she explained that the remains belonged to a friend who found it in a demolished Detroit school building.
Wade believes some charges should have been filed. He said that, “My point was nobody really owns bodies. The collection we have from my point of view is under my care and custody. … This is the remains of a human child. It shouldn’t have been bought or sold. It’s not property per se.”
