LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — A light earthquake shook Los Angeles and nearby towns on early Tuesday, waking millions of people but causing no injuries, seismologists and officials said.

The 4.4-magnitude earthquake at 4.04 a.m. local time struck about 1 mile east-northeast of Pico Rivera, or 11 miles east-southeast of Los Angeles. It struck about 11.2 miles deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said it had gone in a so-called ‘earthquake mode’, and said all its resources are on a radio watch and checking their district for damage. “So far we have no reports of large incidents,” he said.

Scott said the department received an influx of automatic alarms in buildings, and said there were no immediate reports of injuries related to the earthquake.
