Since its commencement in 2006, billions of tweets have been generated and about 55 million are dispatched everyday. The Library will only receive the tweets that are six months or older and only the public ones.

Library of Congress, which is the biggest in the globe, archives all sorts of information. Up to now, data were stored in printed texts. But now, digital devices are being given to accumulate an immense compilation of data.

Alex MacGillivray, general counsel of Twitter, has declared that this decision demonstrates that tweets are a fascinating part of the historical record. He has proclaimed that this is not something that they had visualized when they were developing the service.

The digital archive will include tweets from President Barack Obama on the day he was elected as well as the first tweet from co-founder, Jack Dorsey.

It is not just the Library of Congress, which desires to make an archive of tweets. Google too has divulged its plan to make the Twitter archive searchable for the users. It revealed that anyone who desires to know what people tweeted about can type into the search box, choose ‘show options’ on the result page and then click ‘updates’. A timeline will emerge above the results permitting the user to home in on the tweets.
