Legislation to bring federal funding to NY housing projects announced
February 24th, 2010 - 4:06 am ICT by BNO NewsNEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) – The passage of legislation to Federalize State and City Owned Public Housing was announced by Assemblyman Sheldon Silver on Tuesday.
The legislation would authorize the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) to be eligible for federal funding to repair structural problems in buildings, including Rutgers Houses.
“This legislation will bring vital funding to Rutgers Houses to make long overdue improvements in building security and sorely needed repairs to broken elevators, leaky roofs and individual apartments,” said Silver.
Rutgers Houses has 1,675 residents within its five 20-story buildings and is one of 21 financed housing projects that don’t receive direct federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Through this legislation, the NYCHA will be allowed to enter into mixed-finance transactions and make these projects eligible for federal funding.
