Learner driver jailed for killing 9 year old
December 22nd, 2011 - 10:23 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Dec 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 34-year-old learner driver who killed a 9-year-old girl on her first driving lesson has been jailed two years. Beatrice Mawamba allegedly panicked while driving and lost control of the vehicle. She drove the vehicle into a grass playground where she killed Shamira Grant and injured two other children.
The Leeds Crown Court was told that Beatrice had only been taking theoretical courses online before the accident. She was driving with a provisional drivers’ license, prosecutors told the court.
Lead prosecutor Michael Smith told the court that, “The children describe playing in the early evening and saw a man and woman in a green Vauxhall car. The man was giving some sort of instruction to the woman. The children heard the engine revving and saw it stutter and come flying down towards them fast.”
Judge Justice Openshaw said that Beatrice was “profoundly ignorant” when she got behind the wheels. The judge determined that Beatrice lacked most of the basic skills that she required to take on the steering wheel saying she didn’t know how to apply the brakes. As a result, the judge said Beatrice completely disregarded the safety of the general public when she decided to drive.
Beatrice has also been banned from driving for five years.
