Leading Dutch Writer Harry Mulisch Passes away

November 1, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): the renowned Dutch writer Harry Mulisch who provided the world with some of the finest bestselling novels passed off in his Amsterdam home at the age of 83. Harry has been battling cancer for a long time and he finally succumbed to the disease on Saturday. The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed his condolences over the death of this great Dutch writer and considered it as a terrible loss for Dutch literature and Netherlands.

Harry Mulisch was considered to be Nobel worthy writer by his countrymen. Although the coveted prize always eluded him, he was always considered one of the Goliaths of Dutch literature. Harry Mulisch is well known for his novels “The Assault” and the “The Discovery Heaven” that went on to become worldwide bestsellers. In fact “The Discovery of Heaven” was also named the “best Dutch Book Ever” by a jury of newspaper readers in 2007.

On the other hand “The Assault” by Harry Mulisch is based on an act of resistance in the backdrop of World War II. This book questioned the moral fabric of the society during the war. The book was published in 1982 and it reflected the war torment undergone by Mulisch and his own family. Born on July 29, 1929 in Haarlem Mulisch was one of the few Dutch writers of the wartime generation and he ushered in a new era in Dutch literature.

Mulisch is survived by his books which will continue to ignite the fire of knowledge in the young minds. This literary giant will live on through his work in the minds of all the readers who have been touched by his work.
