Lawsuit Planned Over Racist Pizza Hut ReceiptFebruary 22nd, 2010 - 11:23 pm ICT by Angela Kaye Mason
St. Louis MO Feb 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) After finding what is, in his opinion, a racist remark on his Pizza Hut receipt, a St. Louis Missouri man has plans to sue the national restaurant chain.
Karl Mayberry stated that at first, he was sure that the words,” BIGBLACK” which were typed in capitals letters on his receipt, must have been a promotional thing, or maybe the name of a new pizza. Being a heavyset black man, he decided to check on what he was sure could not be so. He could not believe that the words were actually a description of himself, so he compared the receipt to another Pizza Hut to be sure, and saw that the names of customers were in the spot where the adjectives were typed into his receipt.
Mayberry explained that his feelings were hurt and he was very offended by the remarks, which he considered racist. He said the icing on the cake was the fact that the receipt was handed to him by a Caucasian man on Martin Luther King Day. “To be an African-American male and have that type of injustice done to you, especially by a Caucasian, on Martin Luther King holiday, it just threw me so hard,” Mayberry said.
Although the Pizza Hut has not only issued a letter of apology to Mayberry and given him $50 worth of Pizza Hut Gift Cards, Mayberry said that he feels it is “too little too late” and he intends on suing the restaurant. He added that he had lost his taste for Pizza Hut pizza and gave the gift cards away to a homeless shelter.
It is not uncommon for employees to put notes on the receipts which help them remember who the pizza was for, and descriptions such as “red shirt” or “tall girl” may have been overlooked, but for Mayberry, “BIGBLACK” was just too much. The day on which the incident occurred seems to have added insult to injury in the mind of Mr. Mayberry.
According to Pizza Hut, they have taken corrective action, including new employee training to be sure the policies they have made are adhered to.
