iraqAug 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The last American combat operations departed from Iraq on the wee hours of Thursday marking the end to the bloody as well as controversial operations that commenced in the country in March 2003 to bring an end to the regime of the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. The landmark withdrawal of the U.S. troops comes just weeks of the August 31 deadline pledged by United States president Barack Obama to end the combat operations in the war-ravaged country.

While reacting to the symbolic departure of the American troops, US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley revealed to a media outlet that the exit of the U.S. forces was indeed a ‘historic moment’ but emphasized that the long-term commitment of United States towards Iraq was steadfast. Philip Crowley further went on to describe the development as a ‘transition’ instead of an end as there was still lots of important work to taken care of in Iraq. Moreover, the US State Department spokesperson noted that by losing an estimated 4,400 soldiers and spending a whopping one trillion dollars in the Iraq operations, the war has really come at a very high price.

In the meanwhile, Army Captain Christopher Ophardt who is the spokesperson of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division has validated that the last U.S. combat brigade has pulled out of Iraq and has crossed border towards Kuwait. A senior White House official has confirmed that as many as 50,000 American troops would continue to stay in the war-ravaged country with the aim of providing advise and training to the Iraqi forces and protect the U.S. interests.
