HOUSTON (BNO NEWS) — A large explosion that hit a plant near the city of Seabrook, Texas on Wednesday morning sent a large plume of black smoke billowing into the air, witnesses and officials said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The explosion happened at about 8.50 a.m. local time near Seabrook. Seabrook is a small city in Harris County, Texas, about 30 miles from Houston. “It happened at the American Acryl facility,” said a spokesman for the Seabrook Police Department.

The spokesman said residents of Seabrook have been told to shelter-in-place until further notice, and said emergency crews are responding to the scene. “I have no word on injuries at this time,” he said.

Further details were not immediately available, but users of the social networking site Twitter said they felt a large explosion in the area, some of whom were at least miles away. Photos of a large cloud of smoke were also posted to the website.
