Large cargo plane carrying 9 crashes in the mountains near Kabul
October 12th, 2010 - 11:35 pm ICT by BNO NewsKABUL (BNO NEWS) — A large cargo plane carrying nine people crashed in the mountains near Kabul on early Tuesday evening, officials said.
The L-100 Hercules aircraft, which is the civilian equivalent of a military C-130 transport plane, went down about six miles (9 kilometers) northeast of Kabul, said Muhammad Yaqoob Rassuli, president of Kabul International Airport.
Rassuli said a crew of nine people were on board the aircraft, and said a search and rescue mission had been launched. He did not know if there were survivors.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the aircraft went down just before 8 p.m. local time. “The plane was not an ISAF aircraft,” the alliance said. “Kabul International Airport is expected to remain open.”
No other details were immediately available.
