Shipwreck Discovered Michigan, Jun 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Divers say they have discovered a great wooden ship that sank more than a century ago, in Lake Michigan. The ship was called Doty.

The ship sank during a violent storm on the Lake about 112 years ago. The vessel was kept almost perfectly intact, thanks to the cold fresh water of the lake. The ship was the only largest wooden ship that remained unaccounted for.

The storm that sank the ship also claimed the lives of all 17 of its crew on board. The ship was carrying maize to Ontario from South Chicago in October 1898. The ship, which was about 300 foot long, was discovered by a team of divers led by Brendon Baillod. Baillod is the president of Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association. “It’s the biggest one I’ve been involved with. It was really exhilarating,” according to Brendon Baillod.

Baillod said he spent 20 years researching the Lake Michigan Shipwreck. In 1991, a fisherman reported that his fishing net was caught by some obstruction. However, due to lack of technological advancement in marine diving, the report could not be further investigated until now.

Scientists say they expect to see the bodies of the crew still intact in the cabin.
