L.A. Air Force base employee sentenced for soliciting bribes

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) – A Los Angeles man working at the L.A. Air Force base was sentenced for soliciting bribes from a contractor, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Alejandro Rivera, 39, of the Jefferson Park district of Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to receiving over $70,000 in kickbacks from contractors to whom he steered work.

An Air Force subcontractor who was actually an FBI source paid Rivera on different occasions, $15,680 in May 2008, $6,000 in August 2008, and $15,766 in October 2008, which preceded his arrest.

Rivera admitted accepting kickbacks from three other subcontractors totaling in $73,003, after he had awarded plumbing, construction and painting contracts at the Air Force base hospital.

Rivera was sentenced Monday to 18 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $38,170 in restitution.
