Kuwaiti woman sentenced to death for wedding fire that killed 57
June 13th, 2011 - 1:50 am ICT by BNO NewsKUWAIT CITY (BNO NEWS) — A Kuwait court on Sunday upheld a death sentence for a woman accused of setting ablaze a wedding tent in 2009, killing 57 women and children, Gulf News reported.
Nasra Al Enezi, 24, was found guilty of arson and premeditated murder after setting on fire a tent where her husband was celebrating his second marriage. Neither the husband nor the bride were in the tent since under the country’s social rules women celebrate marriages without the presence of men.
Al Enezi initially said she wanted to take revenge on her husband for taking a new wife. She later claimed that she was upset with her sisters-in-law, but then denied the charges and said that she was forced to confess.
Nasra is the second woman to be sentenced to death. In March 2005, a Kuwaiti woman was sentenced to death for drug trafficking, but her sentence was then reduced to 15 years in prison.
