King Arthur’s 14th Century Manuscripts To Be Auctioned

king-arthur-manuscript-kn-006Nov 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The latest buzz states that King Arthur 14th century manuscripts will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on December 7. This manuscript is the oldest surviving book, that depicts the tales of King Arthur’s legendary court in one manuscript. It has several brightly colored pictures and illustrations to show the lifestyle of the king centered around love, lust, treachery and deceit, friendship and honor.

This manuscript is called “Rochefoucauld Grail” and was written sometime between 1315-1325 on vellum or animal hide in Flanders or Artois. It was created for Guy VII, Baron De Rochefoucauld, an aristocrat from France. However, it was sold in the 18th century, and by 19th century, it was possessed by an English collector, Sir Thomas Phillipps. Later on this prices manuscript changed two more hands. With a long history, this book is still in a very good condition unlike other old manuscripts which are found in snippets and have got damaged with time. Timothy Bolton, an expert in Medieval manuscripts, has been appointed to take up the responsibility if this auction. He expects that the auction would yield an amount of almost 2 million pounds or $3.23 million. He said that all those stories and English folklores about the legendary king, which we have been hearing since ages, and are trans generational on a verbal basis, can be dated back to this book. It is the documentation of the folk lore characters like he Holy Grail, Sir Lancelot, Queen Guinevere and Wizard Merlin.

The book will be sold by a Dutch businessman, J R Ritman, who has been collecting old medieval manuscripts since he was a child. The fund raised through this auction will be used for the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica library in Amsterdam. Timothy Bolton said that this book is an extraordinary one of royal quality, on a stupendous scale.
