February 13th, 2010 - 4:16 am ICT by BNO NewsFRANKFORT, KENTUCKY (BNO NEWS) – Six awards totaling $556,137 will be given to Kentucky State Universities in order to help them commercialize promising emerging technologies, Governor Steve Beshear announced on Friday.
The Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation gave the six awards to researchers from the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and Kentucky State University. The projects cover the priority areas focused by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The University of Kentucky will use the funding to develop and test a new product made from carbon fiber strips and to upgrade existing reinforced concrete and steel bridges and buildings.
Researchers of the University of Louisville plan to spend the funding to design a reactor for producing metal oxide nanowires at commercial scale, develop a Web Assisted Recovery computer to prevent relapse among addicted persons in early recovery, create a wireless device to alert sudden increase in body temperatures in children due to infection, seizure or therapy, and an easy urine-based diagnostic test for obstructive sleep apnea in snoring.
Kentucky State University will help them to develop and commercialize a specialized sensor-based wireless technology to remotely monitor and detect loss of fluid and changes in individual containers.
