Kentucky continues emergency responses and begins damage assessments after storms and flooding struck the state
May 7th, 2010 - 11:19 pm ICT by BNO NewsFRANKFORT, KENTUCKY (BNO NEWS) – Kentucky continues emergency responses to the devastating weekend storms and flooding that struck the state, governor Steve Beshear announced on Thursday.
Local and state officials have teamed up with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) personnel to begin damage assessments across the devastated areas. On Thursday, FEMA personnel arrived at Frankfort for briefings in order to start the assessments on Friday.
The flooding threat has not disappeared as Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake will not reach pool until sometime Friday. Emergency personnel continue to watch the basin of the lower Ohio River to prepare for possible flooding due to the high waters.
“I remain in close contact with federal officials, including conversations with President Barack Obama and other White House officials, as well as Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. They have pledged their assistance, and I will continue to work to ensure Kentuckians get the support they need to recover from this disaster,” said Beshear.
