090907_kent_vote_tallyAccording to the sources, the teachers hailing from the Washington state’s fourth largest district reportedly voted on Monday night to stick on to their mode of “strike” despite the court ordering them to remove the strike period. The court has reportedly urged the members of the union to go back to the school in order to teach the students.

Kent Education Association spokesman, Dale Folkerts reportedly said that about 74 percent of the members of the union refused to go back to work until they are subjected for a ratified contract. The maximum number of union members reportedly voted to continue the strike as long as their demands are met.

The teachers “know there could be consequences” as they have refuted the judge’s order, who urged the to pull back the strike and go back to their work places. Dale said that “after a long and heartfelt discussion”, the teachers who hail from the union decided that this was a cause that was important enough to stand up for, and hence they decided to carry on with the strike as a mark of protest.

The specific demands that the teacher’s association are asking to be met includes the demand for smaller classroom sizes and more time for interaction with students. Folkerts reportedly said that the classroom sizes in Kent are comparatively larger in Kent than other surrounding districts and that over crowded class rooms tarnishes the teaching environment.

On Thursday, the King County Superior Court Judge, Andreas Darvas granted the district’s request for an injunction to force them to go back to the school. But it seems that the teachers would be clinging on their decision ad would continue the ongoing strike.
