homolkaWhile traditionally, ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ has enthralled many a young mind, here’s one that probably didn’t catch on, and with good reason: “The Beauty who was the Beast” aka the Karla Homolka story.

Karla Homolka, the stunning blonde who made it to the limelight for all the wrong reasons, was a native of Port Credit, Ontario, Canada, born on 4th of May 1970. Married to 1964 born Paul Kenneth Bernardo, from Toronto, she and her husband went into the ‘Hall of Infamy’ with their psychopathic homicidal crimes.

The severely disturbing acts of violence both sexual and otherwise, committed by the husband and wife duo, when uncovered, earned them instant notoriety.

The strikingly good-looking couple who seemed inconceivable as the murderous pair, earned themselves the nicknames “Barbie and Ken” murderers. Homolka herself was convicted of manslaughter for the rape-murder of three teenagers Tammy Homolka, Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy while her serial killing, rapist husband admitted to raping still many others.

Having struck a plea deal with the prosecution, she traded in her confession and testimony against her husband, for a reduced sentence and argued the ‘battered wife’ syndrome that seemingly went down well with the jury. She was sentenced to 12 years, while her husband got the maximum Canadian sentence possible: a life term.

The story unfolds on “Karla” a televised version of the sequence of events that redefined brutality glossed over by beauty, and follows the dark deeds unfolding, as ‘Barbie’ metamorphoses into murderous ‘Chucky’, promising to be an unforgettable journey into the very heart of evil.
