Wichita, May 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Dr. Stephen Schneider has admitted that he knew some of his patients died of drug overdose. Dr. Schneider who is accused of prescribing drugs that has claimed the lives of 68 people said that he has now changed his clinic’s practices to prevent future occurrence. The doctor has been charged with 34-count indictment for illegally prescribing drugs. He is also charged with health care fraud and money laundering. Dr. Schneider has been charged alongside his wife Linda Schneider.
During cross-examination, Dr. Schneider said he doesn’t know all the patients who died as a result of his prescriptions. Dr. Schneider defended that money was not the motive for his practice. He said he accepted patients with Medicaid, because he never thought of money in front of the care and medical aid that his patients needed. However the prosecutor, Tanya Treadway showed him a letter the clinic sent to Medicaid in October that informed Medicaid, that the clinic would no longer accept new Medicaid patients.
Dr. Schneider admitted leaving pre-signed prescription forms on his desk for his assistants. He said he never knew that action was inappropriate. “If they are abusing drugs and we find out they are abusing drugs, we discontinue the drugs and get them appropriate treatment,” he said in his defense.
