Sydney, Jan 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had to be whisked away when an angry aborigine mob rushed on her on Australia Day. She was at an awards ceremony when the incident happened.

Gillard’s bodyguards were forced to call the police in when the incident became threatening. Leaders of the aborigine tribe in Australia have condemned the attack calling it “disrespect and aggression.”

As Gillard was being whisked into a waiting car, one of her shoes got missing. She looked visibly frightened during the episode. Opposition leader Tony Abbot who was also at the event was taken away as well.

The protesters came from the Aboriginal tent embassy. Gillard later revealed that she has recovered from the trauma. She said that, “The only thing that angers me is that it distracted from such a wonderful event with great people from emergency services.”

The Australian Aborigines are fighting for sovereignty. However it is not all Aborigines who are happy with what happened. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda told reporters that, “An aggressive, divisive and frightening protest such as this has no place in debates about the affairs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples or in any circumstances.”
