Tegucigalpa, Dec 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Honduran police are hunting for gunmen who shot dead a journalist in the country. The police say 38-year-old Luz Marina Paz and her driver were shot several times as they drive to work. The police say gunmen on two motorbikes carried out the attack in the country’s capital Tegucigalpa.

Just before the assassination of Paz, police say another group of gunmen opened fire at the offices of Tegucigalpa’s Tribune offices. One person was injured in the attack. High crime and drug cartels make Tegucigalpa one of the dangerous places in the world. Human right activists say since 2007 at least 23 journalists have been killed in Honduras.

Inter American Press Association says Paz reported that she has been receiving death threats for failing to pay extortion money. Gustavo Mohme who is the president of IAPA’s press freedom committee revealed that, “These new attacks are part of a campaign of violence and insecurity in general, and of threats and intimidation against editors and journalists in particular that we have been denouncing in Honduras.”

Honduras is home to one of the most corrupt police force in the world. Their attitude seems to have emboldened drug cartels who ship up to half of all the cocaine that gets to the United States.
