Sep 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Renowned United States journalist Edwin Newman has died at the age of 91 years. He died of pneumonia in Oxford, England in August but his family lawyer said the family wanted to come to terms with their loss before announcing his death to the world.

Edwin was reputed as neutral interviewer and he helped anchor NBC newscasts for more than 30 years. He moderated two United States presidential debates during run-up to the country’s elections.

Edwin who retired in 1984, carved an image for himself as a specialist in breaking news. He anchored and announced the news of the assassinations of prominent American politicians during the 60s and the late 70s. He announced the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. when he worked with NBC News from 1961 until he retired in 1984. He also interviewed some prominent people during his working days.

“Ed Newman was an early role model for my generation of NBC News correspondents — worldly, erudite and droll, qualities that were enriched by his pitch perfect use of the English language,” according to a statement by NBC News special correspondent Tom Brokaw.

Edwin relocated to England with his wife in 2007. He died on August 13 in England, and his wife and daughter survive him.
