ravenOct. 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Almost thirty years have passed since the day that almost 900 people had died in a single incident that has forever clouded the history in US under a tragic garb. The incident that had taken place at Jonestown all those years ago has largely been echoed on the pages of the book written by Tim Reiterman, named “Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People.”

After the single most highlighted event from that region, the town of Jonestown attained an almost overnight notorious repute. Till date, it remains to be the only other event in the recent history of America, where such a large number of people had been killed in one stroke [the other being the World Trade Center incident on Sep. 11, 2001].

The informal name of Jonestown was adhered to the community called “Peoples Temple Agricultural Project,” who were based in the northwestern part of Guyana. The cult sect was led on all fronts by the Rev. Jim Jones. On the 18th of November, 1978, as many as 918 people had died in that settlement, including the capital of Guyana, Georgetown and an airstrip that was located near by.

The Jonestown incident is also the only one in which a serving Congressman had been killed while in the line of duty. Congressman Leo Ryan was brutally murdered by the Temple members while he had been visiting Jonestown on an investigative trip. Accompanying him had been the author of the novel, Tim Reiterman, who had been shot at but had survived the attack by the temple members.
