The Bird Rock Bandits have been involved in a number of clashes and misdeeds on the beach at Windansea for more than two years. They have been accused of creating a nuisance after getting drunk on the beach and harassing the beachgoers. In fact, one of their group members, Seth Cravens, 23, has been charged guilty with a second-degree murder. This year in February he was sentenced to 20 years of life imprisonment.

The law was finally able to nail the group when they got themselves involved in a high profile murder case of Emery Kauanui, a 24-year-old La Jolla surfer. Kauanui had fatal head injury during a fist fight on 24th of May, 2007. A group of prosecutors claimed that the five members involved in the case were associated with a number of drunken brawls in the locality. Kauanui’s girlfriend, Jennifer Grosso, who was present in the fight scene, testified in the court against Cravens and also mentioned that though she was continuously asking them to stop the fight but they went on. At the end, Kauanui fell on the ground and his skull cracked.

On the 30th of April, 2009 Jennifer Grosso received the annual Citizens of Courage Award held at the District Attorney’s Office. Grosso has shown her grit and determination when she was presented herself as the sole witness and testified against the Bird Rock Bandits. On the show she said that she had done what any normal person would have done in those circumstances. Since then Grosso has moved on with her life and she is currently studying psychology.
