Jaycee Lee Dugard: Missing California girl found after 18 years
August 28th, 2009 - 3:35 am ICT by BNO NewsCONCORD, California (BNO NEWS) — Jaycee Lee Dugard, an 11-year-old California girl who was abducted in 1991, was found safely in the greater Bay Area of California on Wednesday, officials said on Thursday. Two people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Jaycee Dugard was abducted on June 10, 1991 from a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California. At the time, her stepfather said that a vehicle occupied by two individuals drove up to the 11-year-old girl and abducted her in front of him.
Captain McConnell from the Antioch police department told BNO News that Dugard walked into one of their police stations, but provided no further details. Two people were taken into custody after the girl was found, 58-year-old Phillip Craig Garrido and 55-year-old Nancy Garrido.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Phillip Garrido was being held on $1 million bail on suspicion of kidnapping, rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, sexual penetration and conspiracy. The paper reported that Nancy Garrido was also being held on $1 million bail, on suspicion of conspiracy and kidnapping.
An official with the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez confirmed to BNO News that the two suspects were held there earlier, but have since been moved to an undisclosed site. The state’s Megan’s Law register showed that Phillip Garrido was a registered sex offender and had been convicted of rape by force in the past.
The database listed Phillip as a 58-year-old male, born on 04-05-1951. He has blue eyes, brown hair and is 6′4″. He and his wife currently live at 1554 Walnut Avenue in Antioch, California, where it is believed the missing girl has been held for more than 18 years. Phillip also ran a website, on which he claimed to have the ability to “control sound with my mind.” His website can be found here.
Further details were not immediately available but officials said she is in “good health.”
A spokesman for the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said a news conference was planned for later today, at 6 p.m. EDT. “Since the date of occurrence the investigation has been ongoing and today’s events could bring it to resolution,” Lt. Bryan Golmitz added in a news release.
