September 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Rumor has it that the kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard is working on her memoir. Simon & Schustar recently announced that Dugard will be writing the book herself and it will chronicle the torment she went through at the hands of her captors. The world was shocked when the story of Jaycee Dugard came out in the news papers. The 11 year child was abducted from the streets by a man and held captive for 18 years before she escaped. During her imprisonment, Jaycee’s captor raped her numerous times and fathered two daughters with her. Right now Dugard’s captor Phillip Garrido is facing trial and the outcome is still not certain.
Jaycee and her daughters filed claims for psychological, physical and emotional damages against California’s Department of Correction and Rehabilitation which they claim had failed to perform its duties. Parole officers had been monitoring Garrido but failed to discover Miss Dugard who was being held in the garden. In a record move, the State of California has decided to award $20 million in form of damages to Jaycee Dugard.
Jaycee Dugard’s abductor faces 29 counts of kidnapping, rape and false imprisonment. Meanwhile Dugard’s Book is highly anticipated as a voyeuristic insight into the mind of a pervert sociopath. But most importantly the book will give us hope about the resilience of the human heart. We hope that writing this memoir brings in a sense of closure to Jaycee Dugard and lets her continue with her life.
