Japan’s Robotic actress takes stage
November 12th, 2010 - 9:20 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattTokyo, Nov 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Japan showed again why it is regarded highly when it comes to the production of robots. The country already has several robots that serve in many fields of everyday life. Now the country has added another addition to that list; a robot actress.
The machine actress made her debut by acting with on the same stage with American actress Bryerly Long. The robot has been made to look just like a human being. She has a calm voice but during the “Sayonara” performance on Wednesday, its movement was visibly mechanical. That gave her out as a robot. The robots name is Geminoid F.
The robot was designed by renowned Japanese robot designer, Hiroshi Ishiguro of the Osaka University in western Japan at a cost of about $120,000. it could have been more if the robot had been made with full features. Most of the features were omitted and the robot was fitted with just 12 motors to provide the essential movements that were necessary for the acting on the night.
The robot was dressed in a dark, scoop-necked shirt and dark pants and mimicked breathing during the play. The robot was however continued breathing as it talked on the set. Bryerly obviously felt the shortcomings of the robot during the play and she complained that, “There’s a bit of distance. The robot has a quite particular position because it’s got a voice, but it’s not some kind of human presence”.
