Jammie Thomas Rasset has been fined a hefty sum of $1.92 million for violating copyright procedures. The penalty comes down to $ 80,000 per song. Rasset is the only person in the United States to have gone on a trial for the illegal music file sharing.
The Recording Industry of America had brought the charges against her some three years ago. It has been alleged that Rasset had downloaded more than 1,700 songs using the Kazaa application. In the recent turn of events however, the 32 year old mother of four, has said that it might be her ex- boyfriend of 8 years or her kids, who might have done the need. All these years she has been trying to save them. She did comment though, that she was not sure who had actually done it.
Thomas Rasset Holds a Bachelors degree in business administration and marketing and works for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Indians. The plaintiffs have been able to prove that the computer in Thomas Rasset’s bedroom, connected to the Internet through her ISP account was used to access the Kazaa network. Some one in the Thomas Rasset house had downloaded and distribute well over 1,700 songs.
A teary eyed Jammie Thomas Rasset said on Wednesday,”This case has been a nightmare for me and my family. I’ve had to defend myself for something I didn’t do…It’s not fair. It’s not fair by any standard.”
Whether or not her present story will be bought by the jury and the court will only be revealed in the coming days.The charges have been brought on her by such music labels as RIAA, Vivendi Universal, Sony, EMI and Warner Brothers.
