Jamie Oliver blames Michael Gove for eroding healthy school food standards
November 25th, 2011 - 9:06 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Nov 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver says Britain’s Education Secretary Michael Gove should be blamed for ‘eroding’ the food standard of schools in the country. Jamie believes that the government’s attitude is responsible for schoolchildren being fed “unhealthy food.”
UK has one of the tough legal standards for making food for schools. However the ultimate policy of the government on academies is that they should be responsible for what their pupils consume. That is what Jamie has a problem with.
When he got on BBC’s Breakfast News, Jamie referenced helping draft the legal food standards for British schools when he said that, “The bit of work that we did which is law was a good bit of work for any government. So to erode it, which is essentially what Mr. Gove is doing - his view is we let schools do what they want.”
Strict diet restrictions were introduced in the schools and colleges in England in 2008 and 2009 after massive campaign by Jamie. With the introduction of the restrictions, schools could no longer provide meals considered fatty to children. Sweets and snacks were completely taken off the menu but parents sometimes placed them in the bags of their children as they went to school.
