Rome, Dec 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There were some doubts that there would be some diplomatic issues between Italy and US, over the guilty Amanda Knox verdict, in which she has got 26 years sentence. Italy’s foreign minister Franco Frattini said that there has been no contact between Rome and Washington over the murder conviction of Amanda Knox in Italy.
When the guilty verdict was awarded on Friday for the Seattle bred woman Amanda Knox has fueled doubts of possible diplomatic repercussions among the longtime allies US and Italy.
But Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has removed all such speculations, saying on Monday that no criticism had come from the U.S. State Department. He said that it would be normal for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to look into the case.
Hillary Clinton had said on Sunday that she would meet with anyone expressing concerns for Knox. Amanda Knox was found guilty and given a 26-year sentence whereas her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years Friday for the murder of Meredith Kercher. However the verdict and the sentencing could be turned the other way round as both will appeal, attorneys said.
Arline Kercher, Meredith’s mother, said she believed the two were guilty. “You have to go with the evidence,” she said.
The Kerchers were awarded 4.4 million euro (£3.988m) compensation but Lyle said the figure was “symbolic” and no amount could make up for their tragic loss. He said the sum was to reflect the “severity and gravity of the case”. The family said that the student’s death had left a deep void in their lives, which could never be filled but that they wanted to focus on positive memories of her, so as to move on.
