Italian Police Raid Huge Mafia Clan

July 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) One of the largest ever police raids to be carried out against the very powerful ndrangheta crime organization took place on Tuesday as 300 people, including crime bosses, were arrested and several million dollars worth of property was seized by Italian police.

Domenico Oppedisano, who is believed to be the top crime boss of the ndrangheta organization was arrested early today in the little coastal town of Rosarno, Calabria, which is where the organization is based, according to police. The man who was in charge of business for the gang in Milan was also arrested.

There were over 3000 police officers involved in the raid which occurred during the predawn hours across the country. Among the charges were murder, extortion, drugs and arms trafficking, and association with criminals. The operation was described by investigators as one of the largest blows against the crime organization which is said to be more powerful than the Sicilian Mafia.

‘CBS’ stated that the sweep, “struck at the heart of the ‘ndrangheta’ in terms of both its organization and of its finances,” according to Interior Minister Roberto Maroni. It was also stated to have dismantled some of the organization’s most powerful families, and shed insight into the operations of the clan for police.
