Israel Vetoes The Entry Of The American Intellectual, Noam Chomsky, Into The West Bank

May 18, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Noam Chomsky is a distinguished American academic. He has been prevented from entering the occupied Palestinian West Bank by the Israeli immigration bureaucrats.

Professor Chomsky is well-known for his works on linguistics and philosophical themes. He intended to bequeath a lecture at Birzeit University. Professor Chomsky, an octogenarian, had been attempting to enter the West Bank from the neighboring Jordan.

An Israeli interior ministry spokesperson has divulged that it was attempting to get to the bottom of the matter, subsequent to which it would mull over whether to permit Professor Chomsky to enter the West Bank or not.

Noam Chomsky has articulated that the immigration representatives were exceedingly courteous. However, he was supposedly told that his entry was disallowed because the Israeli government did not appreciate the sorts of viewpoints Chomsky verbalized. Seemingly, they were unhappy that Chomsky was only going to sermonize at Birzeit and not at an Israeli university too.

Chomsky mentioned then that not many governments globally agree with the opinions of Chomsky.

Noam Chomsky’s Palestinian host for the trip, Mustafa al-Barghouti, mentioned to Reuters that the vetoing of the entry is an intolerant measure and is equal to the censorship of liberty of expression.

The interior ministry spokesperson, Sabine Hadad, vocalized that they were discussing this issue with the Israeli military officials. If the military personnel do not have any objection to this visit, Noam Chomsky will be granted an entry.

Professor Chomsky has recurrently spoken his mind against the belligerent Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, which has lasted for more than 40 years.
