Christopher Columbus Oct 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Both America and Canada are celebrating holidays today. It is a national holiday for US and for Canada it is a Thanksgiving as well, a double reason to celebrate.

On Columbus Day, most government and official offices would be closed and people can enjoy a three-day weekend too. There could even be huge Columbus Day parades and events in some areas of America, to celebrate Columbus’s discovery of the Bahamas on the second Monday of the month of October.

Columbus day is a public holiday in most parts of the US, but is not observed as a holiday in some states. Government offices and schools are generally closed, but business establishments may be open. The flag of the United States is displayed on Government buildings.

According to reports, all banks, offices and schools will be closed for the day in many parts of the US. It is a historic day for the whole nation and people celebrate the occasion especially children who make sailor boats and enjoy the occasion.

On October 12, 1492, the Italian sailor Christopher Columbus first stepped foot on the soil on the Bahamas Islands, bringing with him European culture, goods, religion and practices. He mistakenly thought that this was the Indies so he named the natives of this place, as Indians.
