Iraqi Security Forces kill and arrest suspected senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders

BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) — Iraqi Security Forces killed a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader during a joint security operation conducted in east Mosul on Tuesday, the U.S. Military said on Wednesday. A second senior leader was taken into custody in a separate operation.

The senior leader who was killed was identified as Ahmad Ali Abbas Dahir al-Ubayd, who is also known as Abu Suhaib, suspected Military Emir of Northern Iraq who is allegedly responsible for oversight of both vehicle-borne and non-vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attacks against the government of Iraq and the local population in Mosul.

The U.S. Military, who provided advisors for the operation, said al-Ubayd refused to leave the building in which he was hiding and fired at Iraqi Security Forces - who returned fire, killing him. One Iraqi Security Forces member was wounded in the incident but was treated for only minor injuries.

In a separate joint security operation in Mosul on Tuesday, a suspected senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader was taken into custody. He was taken into custody when Iraqi Security Forces and U.S. advisors searched a residential building for a suspected senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader allegedly responsible for the consolidation and distribution of northern Iraq funds that support the al-Qaeda in Iraq network.

The identity of the suspected terrorist was not released.
