BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) — Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) arrested one suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) leader for eastern Mosul, and eight other suspects, U.S. Forces said Monday.

ISF and U.S. advisors searched several buildings in security operations in western Mosul and another was conducted by the 3rd Emergency Services unit and U.S. advisors in southern Kirkuk.

With official warrants issued by Iraqi judges, a suspected AQI leader and six suspected criminal associates were identified and captured after evidence was gathered. The AQI leader was believed to have played a key role in acquiring vehicles and weapons used to carry out assassinations in the northern-Iraqi city of Mosul

In Kirkuk, information and evidence was gathered regarding a suspected mid-level AQI leader for Kirkuk and Diyala provinces believed to be an expert improvised-explosive devices maker responsible for multiple attacks and kidnappings in the region. The search led Iraqi Police to identify and arrest the sought individual and another suspected criminal.

Iraqi and U.S. forces conduct joint operations in accordance with the security agreement and in coordination with the Iraqi government to target terrorists seeking to disrupt the security and stability of Iraq.
