Iraqi Police capture four suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) – Iraqi Police captured four suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) leasers on Wednesday, U.S. Forces in Iraq said.

Iraqi Police and U.S. advisors searched several buildings in two joint security operation conducted in northern Iraq; the first in Bayji, located approximately 101 km southwest of Kirkuk and the second was conducted in another rural area located approximately 76 km southwest of Kirkuk.

The operations resulted in Iraqi Police capturing four suspected Diyala Province, Kirkuk AQI leaders, disrupting AQI operations and preventing future attacks by the terrorist group.

One of the captured leaders is believed to recruit and train new AQI fighters, stage attacks in the region and facilitate the illegal transport of weapons into Iraq from other countries. The other is believed to be responsible for arranging assassinations of government employees in order to disrupt the March 7 elections.

Two suspects ran out of the building while the security team approached the first building, but they were later detained without incident.

Information and evidence gathered at the scene led Iraqi Police to identify and arrest two warranted AQI leaders and two criminal associates.

Both operations were conducted in accordance with the Security Agreement and in coordination with the Iraqi government.
