Iowa’s Governor Culver to receive national service award

DES MOINES, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – Iowa Governor Chet Culver will receive a national service award, his office announced Tuesday.

Governor Culver was named 2010 recipient of the “State and Local Leadership Award,” by Voices for National Service, which is a nationwide advocacy group for cutting-edge public policy in the area of community service and volunteerism.

“It is my honor to accept this award,” Governor Culver said. “I do so on behalf of the literally thousands of people in our state who have rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help people address unmet needs across the state, country, and overseas. From helping to rebuild after the floods of 2008, to our recent response to the disaster in Haiti, Iowans’ ‘spirit of service’ is alive and well,” he added.

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and Congressman Dave Loebsack are also2010 honorees of the award.

Jackie Norris, Senior Policy Advisor at the Corporation for National and Community Service is will be accepting the award tonight on Governor Culver’s at a ceremony in Washington, DC.
