DES MOINES, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – Iowa Governor Chet Culver asked Congress to extend unemployment benefits, the Governor’s Office announced on Monday.

Gov. Culver, in an effort to support Iowa families, said that the federal government needs to support Americans out of work due to the national recession.

“I did this because I knew it was the right thing to do for our families, for Iowa,” the governor added. “I am sending a letter to Iowa’s members of Congress, and letting them know that I and Iowans expect action on unemployment benefits. I am asking in the strongest possible terms that benefits to be extended past the February 28 deadline.”

Last month, Gov. Culver testified to a U.S. Senate committee and called for the need to extend unemployment benefits.
