Iowa Governor Culver calls on Legislature to fund education

DES MOINES, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – Iowa Governor Chet Culver announced on Monday that he will not sign a FY11 budget without 2% allowable growth and an additional $100 million for Iowa schools.

“As Governor, and as a former teacher, my commitment to education transcends even our most difficult budget challenges. I want to make this clear. I will not sign a budget that doesn’t include the funding Iowa’s schools deserve,” said Governor Chet Culver.

Governor Culver first called for this funding in his 2010 condition of the state. This increase in funding will result in more resources for Iowa school districts, large and small, for the next school year.

The estimated increase in funding for each school district is $26.6 million for Des Moines Independent, $12.5 million for Cedar Rapids, $12.1 million for Sioux City, $1.2 million for Chariton and $387,000 for Lake Mills.

“This funding will be a real shot in the arm for some of our schools, especially in rural districts, which are already cash-strapped, with depleted reserves,” said Governor Culver.
