DES MOINES, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – A married couple from Iowa were sentenced for fraud, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Jermaine Roberts and Kristine Roberts defrauded a Nebraska resident out of over $100,000 dollars during a three year period, as they obtained money on the premise that the couple was assisting an inmate of the Iowa Department of Corrections with his effort to get a new trial.

The Iowa couple was supposedly filing paper work to obtain a new trial or the release of the inmate, but the documents used to convince the victim were manufactured falsely, as they continued to request wire transfers for their supposed services.

Jermaine Roberts of Iowa City was sentenced to sixty months in prison while his wife, Kristine, residing in Montezuma, Iowa, was sentenced to twenty-one months. Each of them was ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the amount of $103,424.91 and placed on three years of supervised release after their prison term.
