DES MOINES, IOWA (BNO NEWS) – Nearly $17.5 million in federal funds were awarded on Monday to projects in 10 Iowa communities damaged by the floods of 2008, Governor Chet Culver announced.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDNG) Disaster Recovery Funds allocated $516.7 million for these projects.

“The road to recovery for Iowa’s flood-damaged communities continues, and providing these funds to support the infrastructure necessary for strong and safe Iowa communities is vitally important,” said Governor Culver.

The projects funded include water system improvements to eliminate the threat of contamination, sanitary and storm system improvements to protect residences from flooding and sewer back-ups, as well as rehabilitating various sewer systems.

“These CDBG funds, in conjunction with funding from I-JOBS and FEMA, will help us support rebuilding and sustainable growth to move Iowa forward,” the Iowa Governor added.
